The Third Eye: Solution or a Symptom - What's in it for Us?

Paeng Min-wook has created a gadget called ‘The Third Eye’ which saves a person from getting injured when they are using their smartphone while walking. It helps the smartphone zombies, those who cannot stop looking into their smartphone screens, from running into a wall or a pole while surfing the internet.

The gadget can be strapped to your forehead and it starts operating when the person’s head is lowered to look at the mobile phone. The gadget warns the user of danger, using a beep sound when there impedes within a distance of one or two meters.

Paeng is a 28 yr old postgraduate from Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. His specialization is in Innovation Design Engineering. He believes that this gadget would become a necessity shortly.

The gadget uses an open-source single-board microcontroller to which the ultrasonic sensor and gyro sensor is connected. The gyro sensor is used to measure the oblique angle of the user’s neck and the ultrasonic sensor helps to measure the distance between the gadget and any obstacle. It also comes with a battery pack.

Though with the gadget on the forehead the user could look like an alien, the gadget might help many from running into accidents because they cannot wean themselves from the mobile phone. For this, the reason the gadget could be a boon according to Seoul resident Lee Ok-jo.

Paeng, but, considers this as a satirical innovation that would help the users to realize the danger of their obsession with electronic gadgets and change their habits accordingly. It is time that people stayed away from their mobile phones and remained alert while moving around.
