Android 12 users to be provided with the opportunity to personalize ads, otherwise known as interest-based advertising, based on their interest after updating their Google Play services towards the end of 2021. With the rollout of iOS 14.5, Apple users were allowed to pull out of ad tracking. Google is planning to provide its users with similar features on Android.
The advertising identifier will be replaced by a set of zeros when a user quits interest-based advertising starting from the end of 2021. It will initially work on apps used on Android 12, but by 2022 the feature will be effective on all apps functioning with the support of Google Play Services.
Google had already introduced its new safety feature which enables the user to know what and how much data is being collected and shared by each app, whether their data is secure and other similar details that affect their privacy and security.
Google’s advertising ID is an ID used for advertising introduced by Google Play Services. This ID provides the developers with a system to monetize their apps regularly in a more simple and specific manner. It also provides the user with better control as they can opt-out of the personalized ads or reset their identifiers inside Google Play apps.
The company mentioned that, with this update, when the user opts out of Interest-based advertising the advertising ID will be taken out. This feature would help the app developers and creators with a chance to go in line with the user’s choice and also to follow the new policies from Google.
All new apps and all updates uploaded to Google Play services will need to use a Google advertising ID once this feature comes live. This will make sure that the apps work in line with policies mentioned in the Google Play Developer Program Policy. Use of any other ID is strictly seen as a violation of the above-mentioned policy and will receive a warning signal from Google via their website or the email provided during registration.
