India, with a production capacity of 220 million tonnes, is the largest milk producer in the world. Apart from being an indispensable part of a balanced diet, Milk is a prominent form of livelihood in India, especially for small and landless farmers. It contributes to 1/3 of the gross income of the rural household in India.
This article focuses on the major Indian Startups that deliver unadulterated milk to their customers to celebrate World Milk Day.
Country Delight
Began in 2015 by Chakradhar Ghade and Nitin Kaushal, they currently serve milk for almost 1.5 lakh households. It is supported by Matrix Partners, Orios Partners and Elevation Capital and has risen Series C funding.
The startup, which claims to provide its customers with fresh and pure milk, initially delivered milk directly to its customers. It was later expanded to include dairy products like curd, ghee, bread, eggs etc. They deliver their products directly to the customers. The customers can order products through the mobile app. Country Delight collects milk from farms within a 200 Km radius and delivers it to the customers within 24 to 36 hours. It is a major startup that provides its customers with pure milk.
Stellapps
It is a startup initiated in 2011by Ranjith Mukundan, Praveen Nale, Ramkrishna Adukuri and Venkatesh Seshayee. It has succeeded in digitising the diary service by connecting the consumers to the farms directly. It manages milk production, milk procurement, cold chain, animal insurance and farmer payments by using the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, data analytics and cloud.
Supported by Stride Ventures, it has succeeded in digitising almost 10 million litters every day, which is worth almost $3.4 million. Their clients are mainly private and cooperative diaries.
Milk Mantra
It is an Odisha based startup that delivers milk and milk products, including lassi, curd, buttermilk and paneer in packaged form to its customers. Their processing plants are in Konark and Sambalpur.
It was founded by Srikumar along with Rashima Mishra in 2009 and is one of the leading dairy brands in Eastern India. It was able to raise over $25 million in venture capitals. Its revenue was almost $32 million in 2020 and it serves almost 3 lakh households every day. It is also home to almost 60,000 farmers.
Milk basket
Ashis Goel, Anant Goel and Anurag Jain established this startup in 2015. It is a startup that provides its customers with daily grocery. The customers can get milk and other grocery items delivered to their doorstep through a milk basket.
The startup is named milk basket as they identified that milk urges the customers to buy other groceries too. It has raised almost $40 million and is supported by Kalaari Capital, Point Ventures, Blume Ventures and Mayfield India.
