According to the latest study gig economy have the potential to include more women in the workforce and increase their participation with some amount of reskilling. The gig economy is about short-term contract-based jobs or freelance work and it’s not about permanent jobs.
The research of “The Impact of COVID 19 and Industry 4.0 on Future of Work for Women, An Insight from Formal Sector in India” has stated that as the use of digital technology and the acceptance of virtual working for sales and distribution jobs are increasing, it is opening up new opportunities for women to work on virtual fields of working.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in India, Nadia Rasheed said that this will provide women with better employment opportunities and a better future for themselves. She also said that more scientific research is needed to understand how new technologies are impacting some industries and what problems women are facing for this.
The study has also shown that in some of the sectors like health and pharmaceuticals, electrical and electronics and fast-moving consumer goods industries. But at the same time, women’s employment in the finance and accounting sector has reduced due to new technological adoptions.
Reskilling has taken a big role in shaping the work of tomorrow and this statement has been approved by many respondent firms, specifically the formal sectors. Though some laws and regulations are needed in the changing world of work to provide safety to both employers and employees.
The survey has also stated that work from home or remote working will be the ‘new normal’ and advanced technologies such as digital information, artificial intelligence, robotisation and machine learning will take up a major role in developing the work system.
