Instagram 'Drops': A New Space for Shopping While Scrolling

Instagram has launched a whole new section for shopping under the title “Drops”. This new extension is in the form of feeds available in the app. the section shows those products that are trendy and currently viral on the social media platform.

The shopping section was launched on Wednesday and is highly relevant to its marketing techniques as Instagram is competing with companies like Pinterest, Google and Amazon.

Last year Instagram had launched a Shop section in it which was a platform for showcasing items for sale. Brands are willing to introduce their products on Instagram as a method of being within the community.

So far NOCTA, the fashion and apparel brand, Wren+Glory and Charlotte Tilbury, the cosmetics company, are the few brands to ‘drop’ their products on Instagram.

Since 2020, commerce using social media platforms has increased tremendously. More people have started shopping online using the social media apps and platforms like Instagram has only driven people to shop more as it offers a much easier method of shopping.

This development has made retail giants like Walmart and leading e-commerce company Amazon change according to the needs and demands of customers. With the increased importance of social commerce TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter are also providing opportunities for shopping.

Every social media platform is trying to create space for shopping and commerce within itself. Facebook had launched shops on Facebook and Instagram. It is trying to host live events like the launch of products and sales events done by major brands.

Snapchat had already tried to demonstrate how brands can use the platform to sell their product. Snapchat, in the Snap Partner-Summit, showed how it tried to incorporate augmented reality technology where customers can easily try on products using their mobile cameras.

Brands that sell products directly to customers are trying to use the social media platform to attract the immediate attention of customers to their new items. Facebook is predicted as one of the major threats to the e-commerce giant Amazon.

Amazon has but tried to remain current by designing a new page in its website specifically for products that are trending in social media.
