In a virtual interview at the Mobile World Congress 2021, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink, said that his satellite-internet service might be available globally in August, with the exception of the North and South Poles.
Starlink currently has over 1,700 satellites and operates across a dozen countries, with coverage extending every month. According to Reuters, the number of clients might exceed half a million in the following 12 months. The satellite internet provider had 10,000 members in February of this year and now has around 69,000, implying a seven-fold increase in recent months.
Musk’s firm has low-orbit satellites that provide high-speed communication and low latency, resulting in faster download times. Starlink’s internet was created to reach out to locations where traditional firms are unable to.
According to Starlink’s creator, investment costs before the company achieves entirely positive cash flow will be $5 to $10 billion. Some analysts, according to Reuters, doubt whether satellite internet can be a successful business model because it targets remote geographic locations where there are unlikely to be enough consumers willing to pay high costs.
Musk Is Seeking Partnerships
Tesla CEO Elon Musk also stated that he is in talks with local partners to supply the Starlink service. Musk was adamant about not revealing the identities of these businesses.
This is because several countries compel operators to provide rural service as a condition of their 5G licences, according to the magnate.
